General Health Services

  • Diagnosis and treatment of common medical illnesses including colds, sore throats, ear aches, stomach upsets, sprained ankles and urinary complaints.
  • Care of students with more chronic medical problems such as asthma, diabetes mellitus, seizure disorders.
  • Sports Physicals for those playing intercollegiate sports.
  • Diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Referrals to specialists and/or hospitals as needed. (Students are responsible for charges incurred.)
  • Laboratory facilities are available to obtain routine samples which are sent to an outside laboratory for processing. (Students are responsible for charges incurred.)
  • Injections are given by a nurse. They include vaccinations, allergy shots, and Depo-Provera shots.
  • Self-Help Cold Table is available for student use.
  • Pregnancy testing and emergency contraception are offered.
  • Sexual Health for Men and Women. SUNY Cortland's Student Health Service and Cortland County's Jacobus Center for Reproductive Health work together to provide high quality, confidential, sexual health care for students. Services provided include STD testing and treatment, treatment of vaginal infections, pregnancy testing and provision of contraceptive counseling and methods. Please call the SHS at 753-4811 or the Jacobus Center at 753-5027 for more specific information about the services available and the cost of those services.
  • Medications. A limited number of medications are carried by the Student Health Service.
  • Insurance. Students are encouraged to carry a comprehensive insurance plan. The Student Health fee is not an insurance. The fee supports direct health care services on campus and health education efforts.
  • Medical Excuses. Excuses are not provided for class absences due to short-term illnesses. Responsibility for class attendance and for completion of assignments rests primarily with the student, who assumes this responsibility by communicating directly with faculty. Documentation can be provided for extended illnesses.
  • Transportation. Transportation needs are the responsibility of the student.
  • Health Education. Awareness of current health issues, prevention of disease and illness, and promotion of health and wellness are emphasized. Education materials and programs are available to students.
