Housing Options

SUNY Cortland offers a variety of on-campus living options. From quiet floors to suite-style and apartment-style living, we are committed to providing housing options that match your lifestyle.

Please follow the links below to learn more about our residence halls. Some halls, along with their designation below, also fit into special interest housing areas.

For specific housing questions, please visit our FAQ page, or Room Rates page.

Low-Rise Buildings

Bishop, Fitzgerald, Hayes, Hendrick, Randall, and Shea Halls, referred to as low rises, have four floors with rooms off long corridors and a central lounge on each floor. All freshmen are assigned to these low rises, or to the low rises on top of the hill. Follow the links to obtain building history and staff contact information for each hall.

High Rise Buildings

Alger, Clark and Higgins Halls are referred to as high rises. All three buildings have undergone $3-4 million renovation which created suites, as well as corridors with double and single rooms. High rises are reserved for upper class students.

The buildings are eight stories high and have a scenic view of the surrounding hills. Each floor is designed with a centrally located elevator, hallway and a shared kitchen/lounge.

Follow the links to obtain building history and staff contact information for each hall.

Glass Tower Hall

Glass Tower Hall, our newly built residence hall, is a low rise with four floors and a central corridor. Off of the corridor are quad doubles; two double rooms with a shared bathroom and a vestibule. Each floor has a spacious lounge with kitchen, as well as study rooms.

The Hill

Cheney and DeGroat Halls are located on the upper campus. The first residence halls built on campus, these buildings have a great deal of charm, a beautiful central staircase and the easiest access to the academic buildings.

All freshmen are assigned to these buildings or to the low rises at the bottom of the hill.

Follow the links to obtain building history and staff contact information for each hall.

Suite-Style Halls

Casey and Smith Towers are 10 stories high and feature either four-person or six-person suites. Four-person suites have two bedrooms, a bathroom and a lounge. Six-person suites have three bedrooms and a larger bathroom and lounge. Returning, upperclass students have first choice to live in the Towers.

Follow the links to obtain building history and staff contact information for each hall.

Apartment-Style Housing

The West Campus Apartments is a community of 240 SUNY Cortland students in a 15-building complex located one mile from campus. Each building houses four separate apartments. Each apartment has four single bedrooms, one full and one half bathroom (handicap accessible apartments have one large bathroom), full kitchen, and living/dining room.

West Campus Apartments residents pay a higher room charge than campus students, but are not billed for a meal plan. Students have the flexibility of choosing a meal plan or doing their own cooking.

Special Interest Housing

SUNY Cortland offers housing for international students in Whitaker Hall, as well as quiet floors in residence halls for students who prefer a more low-key atmosphere and floors devoted to transfer students.

Judson H. Taylor Leadership House

The Judson H. Taylor Leadership House is a unique living opportunity for
students who are involved on campus and in the larger community. Single
rooms are available in the house for 10 students who share a commitment
toward the common good, and who work together to serve others. As an
added benefit, they learn about themselves in the process.

Leadership House residents share a common kitchen and lounge area and
may opt out of the meal plan; with an emphasis on community, life in the
Leadership House is one of shared experiences and learning skills that
will last a lifetime.

Students are selected for residency in the Leadership House based upon a
group application process; first semester freshmen are ineligible for
application.
