Did You Know?
- SUNY Cortland has adopted strict sanctions with regard to alcohol violations.
The minimum sanctions for the "three strikes" policy likely to be imposed are as follows:
- 1st Violation (1st strike): Residence Hall Probation for one year; student must complete the Alcohol 101 computer program and write a two-page reflection paper on their experience and the program.
- 2nd Violation (2nd strike): Disciplinary Probation for one year; substance
education program; 30 hours of community service; and in some cases, a counseling assessment. (Under certain circumstances, room reassignment may occur.)
- 3rd Violation (3rd strike): Suspension from all residence halls or suspension
from the college effective immediately for a minimum of one semester; Deferred suspension for four months followed by two years of Disciplinary Probation; counseling assessment; five-page research paper on alcohol.
- Parents of dependent students are notified of disciplinary decisions when students are found in violation of the charges brought against them.
- Students in education majors will have judicial background checks prior to being admitted to a teacher education major and prior to doing field work. Certain offenses may have consequences with education program enrollment.
- If a student is arrested for a serious incident off campus or is arrested multiple times they will be referred to the campus judicial system.
- Certain drug arrests and convictions will result in loss of financial aid.
- If you are under 21 years of age you may not consume alcohol. In addition, if you are caught with alcohol under the age of 21 years, University Police can arrest you for underage possession.
- SUNY Cortland does not allow beer bottles on campus, even if you are 21 or older.
- Alcohol cannot be consumed in public areas or lounges in the residence halls, or on any campus grounds.
- Students 21 and over may not consume alcohol in the presence of an individual under 21.
- Kegs, beer balls or any item that can be used to ingest alcoholic beverages in an irresponsible manner, ie- funnels, are not allowed.
- Drug paraphernalia or any items which can be used or are designed for the use of drugs are not allowed.
- You must carry your college identification card with you at all times. Failure to do so, or providing false information to a college official, is against college policy.
- You are responsible for your guest's actions while they are on the SUNY Cortland campus.
- Failure to comply with requests from a residence hall staff member is against college policy.
- Banner holds will be placed on the education records of students who fail to complete their sanctions by imposed deadlines.
- The Electronic Use Policy requires students to be responsible for their computers. Students who use peer-to-peer file sharing programs may be making copyrighted materials available for download from a campus residential IP address, which not only violates the provisions of computer use policies, but it is also against the law. Students found in violation of the Electronic Use Policy may possibly face serious sanctions. For more information on the Electronic Use Policy, please consult the Code of Student Conduct at: www.cortland.edu/judaffairs/code.html. For more information on the terms of service for residential computing, please consult your End User Agreement .
- SUNY Cortland currently has several groups that are not recognized or permanently banned by the College. Permanently banned groups include the former fraternities Delta Kappa Beta ("Kappa") and Beta Phi Epsilon ("Beta"). Students found to pledge, be a member, or live in any residence of these banned groups will likely face a lengthy suspension or permanent dismissal from the College.
