International Applicants

SUNY Cortland welcomes applications from foreign nationals seeking matriculation into graduate programs. The following materials must be returned to the SUNY Cortland Graduate Studies Office unless otherwise designated.

1. Cortland's Graduate Studies Application along with the $65 (U.S. dollars only) application fee.
Deadlines for applying are:
Spring - September 1
Fall - April 1

2. International students also need the English proficiency report, autobiographical essay and financial support statement

3. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) exam report

4. Graduate Record Exam (GRE) score report if required by the department

5. Official college transcripts with professional translation of all documents into English along with the original document

6. Copy of Passport


Applications will be reviewed for admission based on their academic accomplishments, ability to finance their education and level of proficiency in the English language.

Immigration form I-20, which the applicant will use to secure an F-1 visa, will be issued to the applicant once all required information has been received and the applicant has been accepted to the College.


Form I-20

Admitted students will receive a form I-20 after acceptance into the graduate program. This form should be used to obtain an F-1 visa through the American Embassy in the home country.

International students (students whose citizenship is with another country and do not have permanent resident status in the United States) may apply for assistantships, but are not eligible for federal financial aid. Any monies received through assistantships, scholarships or loans can be applied to the financial support statement.

Non-matriculated Student Status

International students (including those with permanent resident status in the United States) who are not accepted into a degree program and wish to take graduate courses as a non-matriculated student, must register and pay for their classes in the Graduate Studies Office. You will need to provide the following information when you register:

Copy of your Visa or Permanent Resident Card
Visa type
Nationality
Country of citizenship
Country of birth
