Certificate of Advanced Study
Admission Requirements
Applicants for enrollment in the program leading to the Certificate of Advanced Study in American Civilization and Culture should present the following:
1. B.A., B.S. or equivalent degree offered by a foreign university
2. Demonstrated command of written and spoken English as verified by the appropriate scores on the TOEFL Examination
Program Requirements
1. A total of 18 hours of graduate course work.
2. Twelve hours of an approved interdisciplinary concentration with demonstrable coherence and direction such as:
* American History or Government
* American Social and Economic History
* American and English Literature
* American Literature
* Foundations of American Education
* American Institutions
3. Six credit hours of graduate course electives in American civilization and culture to be selected in consultation with the advisor.
4. At least six credit hours of course work at the 600-level.
5. A minimum B (3.0) GPA in courses taken to complete the program, with no grade below a C- counting toward certificate requirements.
6. Additional requirements: Students must meet any specific prerequisites for any course they wish to take, or obtain special permission of the instructor and the department chair concerned. Special permission may require a diagnostic examination.
The specific course components of each student's program of study must be approved by the faculty advisor and the director of graduate studies.
