A new member of the SUNY Cortland community, Peter VanderWoude, a certified public accountant, has found that a growing number of alumni, employees and friends of the College are now including the Cortland College Foundation in their estate plans or intend to benefit the College through a planned gift.
As manager of planned gifts, Peter VanderWoude is in charge of providing a planning service for Cortland alumni and friends who would like to explore creative ways to fulfill their charitable intentions towards the College that do not risk financial security for themselves or their families.
“If there is charitable inclination towards Cortland and an outright gift is not possible, we help our alumni and friends explore options that fit their personal situation,” VanderWoude explains.
For many that could be naming the Cortland College Foundation as a beneficiary of their will, retirement plan, life insurance or trust. Others may consider a gift of their home through a retained life estate.
A popular planning option that is now available at Cortland is the charitable gift annuity. This is a gift option that is part gift, part annuity that provides an attractive guaranteed fixed income for life.
“The possibilities in planned giving are endless and sometimes can be complex. That’s why the College has placed me in this role to help our alumni and friends,” VanderWoude notes.
An active member of the local Cortland community for more than a decade, when VanderWoude began his career at SUNY Cortland in May 2004, he was already familiar with the campus. In fact, his wife, Kimberlea, has been an administrative assistant for the Cortland College Children’s Center since 1993. His daughter, Kellea, has completed two years at SUNY Cortland. And both Peter and his father, George, have taken evening courses on campus in the past two decades just for the pure joy of learning.
