BA and Ph.D. from Lehigh University. Postdoctoral research
at Cornell University. Sabbatical research as a visiting scientist at the
US Environmental Protection Agency Research Laboratory, Athens, GA.
Research interests: High temperature rate studies of gas
phase reactions; Rate studies of hydrolysis of chlorinated solvents in
water; Hydrolysis rates of organophosphate pesticides; Measurements of
trichloroethylene , an industrial solvent, in the local aquifer that supplies
water to the city of Cortland; Characterizing the degradation of methyl
bromide, an important agricultural fumigant, by plant leaves. I have a
total of about 50 research articles published, many of them with students
as co-authors. I usually have several students doing research under my
supervision during the academic term, and have often had one or two students
as research assistants during the summer, supported by research grants.
Teaching duties: Physical chemistry, general chemistry,
glassblowing!
Other interests: I ran marathons for about 25 years, a total of 85, with a best time (at Boston) of 2 hours 24 minutes. I ran (and won) three 50 mile races. I played varsity soccer and baseball in college, and I now coach youth soccer. I enjoy making replicas of antique furniture, and I regularly do carpentry and plumbing repairs on my house.
