By review

To be eligible for the IB Diploma, students are required to offer (take) one subject from each of the six subject groups and to complete an extended essay of 4000 words, Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course, and the extracurricular Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) component. At least 3 and not more than four of the six subjects must be taken at the higher level HL (min 240 teaching hours), and the remaining subjects are taken at the subsidiary/standard level SL (min 150 teaching hours). Each course is awarded a grade of 1 (minimum) to 7 (maximum) by external examiners. The diploma is awarded to candidates whose total score (including bonus points for extended essay and TOK) reaches or exceeds 24 points and does not contain any failing or excluding conditions. The maximum number of points a student can receive on his or her diploma is 45.

Students who do not complete the diploma requirements, or who elect to take fewer than six subjects, are awarded a certificate for the examinations completed.

Theory of Knowledge and extended essay scale:

A candidate’s official transcript is typically marked DIPLOMA AWARDED OR CERTIFICATE AWARDED.

The exceptional BILINGUAL DIPLOMA AWARDED classification indicates that a candidate has offered two Languages A1; or has offered a Language A1 and a Language A2, or has taken an examination in either the Individuals and Societies or the Experimental Sciences groups in a language other than the Language A1.
